Me and my motor

Got my short block in today.

I expected it yesterday and when tracking did not show any movement since the 26th, I call DHL to figure out what’s going on.

That was a stressful decision I regret making. What I learned, after calling them 5 separate times yesterday, was that a)it wasn’t going to be delivered yesterday b) it never made it to Portland c)it made it to Portland but was being held for a payment d)the Portland warehouse said they conducted a search and it’s not there and e)they have no way to actually call a DHL servicepoint and rely on emails.

I drove down the the local DHL spot, and asked about my tracking number. “Oh yeah it’s here. Getting ready to go out for delivery. Do you want it?”

I am not sure what the lesson of this exercise in patience was.

Just be patient and wait most likely...

DHL is a bunch of numpties at times, but at least I haven’t had a lost package with them like I did with Amazon Logistics.

In the 3 times I’ve tried using DHL for shipping, the items arrived exactly zero times. I’ll never use DHL again.

Qualifier: this wasn’t for me personally...these were items I ordered through my company ( after having “use the cheapest option” hammered into my head repeatedly) . Arguments were had after both the first and second times, and after the third time they finally came around to my view.

I used to manage a warehouse, and the only way to ship to China was through DHL. Never had anything go missing, but almost all of it was delayed.

Keep in mind, I was shipping multi million dollar laser machines. What I found most effective was to take the paperwork that was needed to get through customs, and put LITERALLY 15 copies of it all over the outside of the crate. If you only put 2 or 3 copies (the recommended amount) it would, without fail, get held up at one point for lack of paperwork. My solution was to go nuclear and make it impossible for that to happen.

I work for dhl and yes there are some idiots that work there and there system is half ass and makes no sense at times but on the driving side we deal with a lot of bullshit. planes always late so we can’t start pulling packages till it gets there. Unlike ups and fedex the drivers pull all packages at DHL that come down the belt and we have to load up ourself that’s about 3hrs or more of  work before we even get to hit the road. there is also a curfew so were not suppose to deliver past 8pm which causes a problem cause whatever you can’t deliver goes out next day and the process just continues throughout the week till you hit Friday and have 100+ deliveries on board and can’t finish that day either s o then you have to take your day off on Sunday to then go deliver everything you couldn’t deliver during the week so that the following week you can start fresh . There’s a lot of stuff the drivers have to deal with before we even get o n the road. Trust me we’d love to get everyone there packages the day we get them to not be stressed all week trying to get people what they ordered. And now with this whole covid thing going on we are getting more freight in on a daily basis then we do on the holidays. It’s rough and we try to do what we can to get to everyone but with a 6hr window everyday to deliver it unrealistic.

Funny, even 20 years later I’m still “creeped out” by the founder’s hobbies and fetishes...  I still always avoid DHL if I possibly can.

Weird, because usually about 9 months after the DHL founder came there were LOTS of deliveries.

Yeah, I had a similar experience.  However many copies they said were “required”... you always ended up doubling that number... just in case.

Oh I totally hear that.

My beef wasn’t with drivers. It’s the model of communication between hubs.

If someone had the ability to get on the phone and call Portland(or any hub) rather than email messages across a special closed system, all the hassle could have been avoided.

Or if I had just gone down to the station the day before, rather than call throughout the day, I could have found it sooner too.
